Content

Alongside the well-established audio description in film, live audio description in theatre has finally become significantly more widespread than just a few years ago. Increasingly, blind and visually impaired individuals are being sought as co-authors. Only a team of blind, visually impaired and sighted audio describers can ensure that the audio description truly meets the needs of blind and visually impaired users.

This introductory day will be led by the blind trainer Rose Jokic together with her sighted colleague Matthias Huber. Rose Jokic has been developing audio descriptions for many years and will share her valuable experiences and perspectives both as a user and a co-creator. Together with Matthias Huber, she will provide a hands-on introduction to the topic and teach how to create audio descriptions that meet the needs of blind and visually impaired people. Additional components that complement audio descriptions, such as a tactile stage tour or audio flyers, will also be covered. Furthermore, participants will have the opportunity to learn from and with each other in an inclusive environment and share their experiences and perspectives in an open discussion, as well as ask questions about the potential field of work in audio description.

Speakers

Rose Jokic
Rose Jokic, B.A. in Social Work, has been working on accessibility from a blind perspective for many years. In workshops and specialist contributions, she teaches digital accessibility on websites, social media and learning platforms, as well as audio description. She lectures at the Technical University of Cologne in the Social Work programme and is committed to inclusion in various fields. She contributes to the descriptions of theatre performances, films, series and operas by working with sighted colleagues to review, edit and adapt visual material so that it is understandable for people who cannot see. As an inclusive media educator, she teaches children and adults how to describe videos as a team and integrate these descriptions into the audio track.

Matthias Huber
Matthias Huber, who is sighted, is a freelance director, dramaturg and author of audio descriptions. In 2013, he established an audio description team at Schauspiel Leipzig and initiated a tactile guidance system at the theatre. Since 2018, he has worked nationwide for various theatres, festivals and theatre groups, always in a team of blind and sighted authors. In 2021, he was part of the disability-led performance “(We don’t) [kehr]” by and with Jana Zöll/Steven Solbrig at Un-Label, and in 2023, he was editorially responsible for the accessibility pages of “theaterübersetzen.de”, a website by the International Theatre Institute, Germany (ITI). Matthias Huber is a board member of the Association for the Promotion of Leipzig’s OFF-Theatre (LOFFT) and a member of Hörfilm e.V., the association of German film describers.
