Guide Inclusive Media Coverage

Throughout our inclusive cultural work – spanning well over ten years – we have repeatedly experienced that people with disabilities are often portrayed in the media solely through the lens of their disability. Such ableist representations reduce complex lived experiences to stereotypical narratives and reinforce societal power structures instead of challenging them. For this guide, we drew on existing resources – particularly the well-researched guides by Leidmedien and Acesso Cultura – as a foundation. We have summarized key content from these sources, contextualized it, and expanded it through our own experiences and perspectives. With this guide, we aim to offer journalists concrete support in portraying people with disabilities in a differentiated, respectful, and stereotype-free manner. Media shapes our thinking and worldview – which is why journalists carry a special responsibility and can actively contribute to social change.

Short Texts about Un-Label

Un-Label stands for artistic innovation and diversity. For over 10 years, the organization has been contributing to an inclusive opening of the cultural landscape, creating contemporary stage plays and promoting talent in open inclusive workshop series and masterclasses. Through consulting, training, symposia and research projects, Un-Label networks and qualifies actors and researchers from inclusive culture throughout Europe. The organization is made up of artists and cultural professionals with and without disabilities from all over Europe.

Our work is based on three pillars:

  1. Artistic productions
With master classes, workshops, international symposia and residencies, we create experimental spaces in which cultural institutions and artists with and without disabilities learn together how inclusion works. Our own inclusive productions and co-productions are presented at renowned festivals and cultural institutions worldwide.
  2. Studio
Our studio in Cologne Ehrenfeld is both a place of development and networking for the independent performing arts community. It is the heart of our strong network of artists and actors in inclusive and intersectional cultural work.
  3. Consulting and qualification
Un-Label advises and qualifies cultural institutions in the performing arts as well as funding institutions. We also offer further training for artists with and without disabilities and empower lecturers and consultants with disabilities in specific further training formats.
