About the masterclass

We are beyond excited to host a two-day masterclass with Giuseppe Giuranna, a leading Visual Vernacular (VV) artist. VV is a unique and cinematic storytelling technique deeply rooted in Deaf culture. Ready to let your Sign Language knowledge evolve into visual poetry? Then you should absolutely consider taking part in this masterclass!

What is Visual Vernacular?

Visual Vernacular (VV) is an extraordinary visual technique that combines Signs, gestures, facial expressions and spatial movement to create dynamic, multi-perspective narratives – much like a poetic live-action film unfolding on stage. The term “Vernacular” refers to a localized, distinct form of expression, comparable to a dialect, while “Visual” highlights its essential reliance on sight—the core of Deaf communication. VV allows performers to portray multiple characters, shifting perspectives as if viewed through different camera angles, creating an immersive experience for the audience.

Giuseppe Giuranna’s masterclass is an electrifying journey into the expressive potential of VV. With his contagious energy and creativity, he guides participants through the nine fundamental rules of VV composition, demonstrating that all Deaf individuals possess the linguistic resources to create in VV.

During the masterclass, participants explore the origins of VV – born in England and later flourishing in Germany, France, and beyond – where dedicated events and festivals have been celebrating this art form already for a long time.

Giuranna emphasizes that VV is not something to be strictly taught but rather an innate skill that can be honed and applied to various forms of storytelling, including narratives, fables and poetry.

The Nine Rules of Visual Vernacular

  1. Facial Expression – The foundation of emotion and storytelling.
  2. Far, Near, In, Outside – Manipulating space and perspective.
  3. Three-Dimensionality – Creating depth and dynamic motion.
  4. Position and Space – Structuring movement within the performance area.
  5. Different Signs – Utilizing a variety of visual elements for clarity.
  6. Visual Metaphor – Translating abstract ideas into compelling imagery.
  7. Rhythm – Controlling pacing and intensity.
  8. Mime Show – Enhancing the narrative with physical expression.
  9. Personality – Infusing unique character into the performance.

Be prepared for an unforgettable experience, get inspired to embrace your visual storytelling instincts and explore the full potential of Visual Vernacular.
