How can a creative idea be brought to the stage in a simple yet powerful way? And how can it be made as accessible and inclusive as possible for people with different disability perspectives? In this masterclass, renowned British theatre-maker Nickie Miles-Wildin will show how you can practically, playfully, and experimentally develop your first impulses into vivid stories that are brought to life through theatrical means. She draws on her wealth of experience from many years of artistic productions with mixed-abled teams and diverse disability perspectives. The masterclass will be held in English; peer-to-peer interpretation into German spoken language is available if required.
The creative process often begins with a simple idea or a fleeting thought. But that idea alone is not yet a piece ready for the stage. How can it become something tangible, something that can be presented to an audience? And how can this be made as accessible and inclusive as possible for people with different disability perspectives? In this masterclass with renowned British theatre and film-maker Nickie Miles-Wildin, you will not only learn how to spark your creative process but also how to translate your first impulses directly into stage work. Drawing from her extensive experience with mixed-abled artistic teams and various disability perspectives, she will guide you through a process that is playful and experimental. Using movement, music, props, and other theatrical tools, you will create stories that are accessible to as many people as possible. This workshop is not only about inventing stories but also about shaping them on stage in ways that enrich a broad audience. Anything can serve as a starting point for this creative journey. Nickie Miles-Wildin, an expert in integrated creative accessibility (Aesthetics of Access), will show you how to bring your ideas to life in innovative ways. The focus is on collaborative, hands-on practice. There will be space for creative experimentation and the further development of your own projects – and who knows, maybe by the end of the two days, a small theatre piece will emerge?
This masterclass is aimed at artists and theatre-makers with and without disabilities from a wide range of fields: performers, dancers, actors, musicians, directors, dramaturgs, as well as cultural practitioners and anyone interested.
Expert
Nickie Miles-Wildin is a theatre and audio director, filmmaker, and workshop leader. As an award-winning theatre-maker, her passion lies in all forms of Aesthetics of Access and in creating work that challenges prejudices against disabled people. She is currently Associate Director at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester. Previously, she was Artistic Co-Director/CEO of DaDaFest and Associate Director of the internationally renowned theatre company Graeae. Both organisations are led by D/deaf and disabled artists and have been advocating for equality in culture since 1981. Nickie is also co-founder of TwoCan Theatre in Gloucestershire.
Her recent theatre productions include The Little Big Things (dramaturgy and associate director) for @SohoPlace in London’s West End, The Little Big Things, directing Little Bits of Ruined Beauty, Leave the Light On For Me, and for radio Love Across the Ages.
