L.I.K. – Laboratory for inclusive culture
The “L.I.K. – Laboratory for Inclusive Culture” project will enable a significant step for the independent performing arts scene in Cologne: The Un-Label Studio is opening its doors and will be one of the first places in Germany where the independent performing arts community can test, learn and develop inclusive and intersectional art and culture.
The Un-Label Studio will become the engine of inclusive urban development and a lively meeting place for urban society and culture.
Project duration: October 2023 – April 2026
The new Un-Label Studio offers a barrier-free environment with a rehearsal and seminar room, an office and a spacious garden in the centre of Cologne-Ehrenfeld. In the coming years, the studio will serve as an open rehearsal space for the independent scene, enable residencies for artists with disabilities and provide space for mixed-abled masterclasses with international artists and for a wide range of training courses. Un-Label would also like to initiate collaborations with actors in inclusive and intersectional cultural work. At the same time, the Un-Label Studio will also become a meeting place for artists, culture enthusiasts and people from the neighbourhood.
At a time when people with disabilities are still mostly confronted with exclusion in the cultural sector, the content concept of the Un-Label Studio offers solutions: It creates space and programmes that meet the specific needs of people with disabilities in a cultural context.
Despite the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2009, which provides for equal participation in cultural life for all, there are still virtually no inclusive and barrier-free venues in the independent scene in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia and throughout Germany where people with and without disabilities can create and attend cultural and artistic programmes together and develop their artistic skills. With the L.I.K. – Laboratory for Inclusive Culture project, the Un-Label Studio is realising a creative and social space that enables inclusion in everyday life. The studio will thus also be a place of change.
